FIFTEEN

The walls closed in on Rae; the air in her lungs clogged. She lifted her head and scanned the restaurant. All eyes were on her. Some customers stood to better look at the crazy woman going on about a picture.

“Get me out of here. Please.”

“We can figure this out…”

“I can’t be here.” She rushed toward the door, slamming through it, and came to a halt around the side of the building. She bent at the waist, her hands on her thighs as she tried to fill her lungs. All she had to do was cross the side street, dash through the park, and she would be home. Owen was waiting for her. He helped her breathe when nothing else worked.

Without waiting for the light to change, she stepped off the curb. A sedan inched into the middle of the street, blocking traffic. She charged behind it to the opposite sidewalk. The park gave her little comfort, but she quickened her pace, dodging joggers enjoying their run around the lake. One more intersection, a two-block sprint, and her neck and shoulder tension eased. She took the steps on her porch two at a time, unlocked and opened her front door, and froze. The scream lodged in her throat. This was the last straw. Her fingers trembled as she dug her cell phone from her pocket. “Owen, where are you?”

Every drawer and cabinet in sight was ripped open and the contents scattered. Her new sofa with the pretty summer floral pillows—carved to pieces and left where they were thrown.

“Owen, please, boy. Answer me.”

She dashed behind the sofa, flipping what was left of the sofa cushions into the air. “Owen?”

Each call sliced a new hole into her heart, and then she spotted him, curled in a ball, his eyes shut and on his side. She placed her fingers inside his leg in his groin region. The first bounce of his pulse against her palm released the air she held in her lungs. The second beat, maybe a little stronger than the first, ignited her heart.

He’s alive!

A hard fist banged on her door. Before she could answer, Jackson filled the doorway. “Raelynn!”

“I’m here,” she said, raising her head over the upturned wing chair. “Owen’s hurt.”

“What the hell happened in here?”

“Help me. Owen’s femoral pulse is strong, and he’s breathing on his own. But I can’t wake him.”

“Let’s turn him.”

The urge to rest her head against Jackson’s shoulder overwhelmed her. Somehow, just having him close shocked her mind into doctor mode.

“No blood.” She raised his right eyelid and then the other, swallowing the sob in her throat. “Membrane, moist and pink. That’s good.”

“There are no signs of distention in his abdomen. Maybe rule out internal bleeding,” Jackson added. “There’s bruising on his skin under the hair of his left ear and neck. Whoever tore through this place kicked him. There is nothing I hate more than a bully.” He gently pressed around Owen’s ears and neck. “Don’t you worry, boy. He’ll get what he deserves for this, I promise you.
